In the state of California, every child between ages 6-18 must be registered in a school. Some families desire to homeschool on their own without government involvement and with complete flexibility. California allows these families to file a Private School Affidavit (PSA), which essentially qualifies the home as a private school. Parents will need to keep attendance records, but no other reporting is required. Additionally, families who enroll their children in a part-time school or a private online school can file the PSA in order to avoid truancy. Filing a PSA is a very simple process. Just follow the steps listed here.
1. Submit a Private School Affidavit to the State of California. Online PSA Form
2. If applicable, send a withdrawal letter to the child’s previous school. Sample Letter
