What is Equitable Math?

White Supremacy Culture shows up in math classrooms when:

Students are required to “show their work” in standardized, prescribed ways.

Math is taught in a linear fashion and skills are taught sequentially.

Students are tracked into courses/pathways and within the classroom.

Equitable Math is a term used to describe the integration of Critical Race Theory into the study of mathematics. Traditional methods of teaching math are considered to be founded in white supremacy. Many in education believe there is evidence of white supremacy in the California Standards for the Teaching Profession (CSTP). Currently the California State Board of Education is in the process of updating state math standards to conform with this theory. We must do what is necessary to prevent this change in standards.
